(More customer reviews)I received a 16 piece set of these plates for my birthday, January 5th 2010. They are gorgeous in person and are quite heavy. Due to some errors on behalf of the company they were ordered from, I researched these plates the day I got them.
(I ordered a slightly different looking set, also called Galaxy Jade by Baum, but they had smaller brown borders and were more of deep blue green and brown with a wash of dark glaze in the center. Instead what I received were the very plates pictured here.)
I looked at the reviews for these plates at other prominent online sources, and the response to these has been overwhelmingly negative. Complaints from everything such as terribly fragile and breaking easy, to not microwave safe.
I decided to baby my set, as I thought they were gorgeous, and would be heart broken to return them. I handled them very carefully, I hand washed them with a mild soap immediately after use, I never let them sit in water, I never used them in the microwave. It hasn't even been 2 weeks since I received them, and the glaze has stained, edges of the plates are turning white in small areas, the glaze has started to crack off in tiny areas. The final offense is when I was putting my dishes away tonight, and one edge of a plate lightly clicked against the edge of another, and the plate chipped! A huge chip at that! There is no way the fragility of these plates can be seen as reasonable. They are beautiful, but very poorly made.

Singer 57817 17 Stitch Function and Electronic Speed Control Sewing Machine Review

(More customer reviews)I have had this machine for years! I paid a lot more for it than Amazon is offering. So the price is just not an issue here. The main advantage of this machine is 1) It is Singer (the name says it all); 2) It has an automatic thread tension control (an invaluable feature for novices!); 3) It has 17 stitches (even the one for sewing on buttons, embroidery, and monogram); 4) It is very easy to operate, as a very detailed and easy to comprehend user manual is included; and 5) It is light-weight, compared to those bulky Kenmore and Bernina machines, it is is just a baby!
I would definitely recommend this machine to novices (especially for such a price) it is easy and cute, too.

Euro-Pro Dressmaker 998B Sewing Center Review

(More customer reviews)I tested this machine for a small needlework shop to see if it were worth keeping around for emergencies and odd jobs.
Although the description claims that this little machine takes the "intimidation" out of sewing, it's really a fussy little gadget that best serves experienced stitchers in emergency situations or while travelling. To expect that a neophyte would be able to know how to adjust tension and manipulate fabric is to invite verbal abuse from those who don't know what they're doing.
One of the main flaws of this machine is not necessarily its mechanics (it's far noisier than a regular machine), but its accessories; it's shipped with a pack of bobbins and spools pre-wound with the worst thread imaginable: cheap, fuzzy, short-fiber spun polyester. Not only will spun polyester thread cause expensive machines to choke, but in this machine, it's a recipe for the disasters of tangling thread, throat plate jams and damaged needles.
The needles it's shipped with -- inferior metal, semi-ball point -- will only handle plain-woven midweight cotton fabric. If you attempt to stitch on stretch or knit fabric, be prepared for skipped stitches and jamming, unless you purchase ballpoint needles and long staple polyester thread. Woven fabrics are best stitched with sharp-point or universal point needles.
I was disappointed that I couldn't find a way to adjust stitch length, even though I've operated dozens of domestic, commercial, and industrial sewing machines. The "speed control" buttons are practically useless, and do not control the feed dogs. There is no reverse stitch control to form backstitching at the beginning and end of a seam.
I found the size of the power pedal small enough to hold between the knees (to keep it from "creeping").
When the proper thread and needles are used for the project (and again, a complete beginner would have no idea about using undamaged points or when to choose long staple poly or cotton) this machine stitches well enough for quick seams and hems.
If you're looking for a "first" sewing machine, buy one in the $80 - $140 range from a shop where the staff are willing to help you learn to sew. The Euro-Pro Dressmaker 998B is NOT for raw beginners without an experienced sewing buddy, but for experienced or casual stitchers who use the proper thread & needles for small projects or emergency repairs.

Kenmore Serger Sewing Machine Review

Easy to use and the dvd that comes with it is very good. I would highly recommend this serger. I got on sale for $199 at Sears and have been very happy with it.

Singer 34-Stitch Esteem Sewing Machine - White (1732) Review

(More customer reviews)I would say this is an okay machine for beginners. I say this because some seem to have the impression that the machine is supposed to do everything for you. First read the manual thoroughly so you can understand how the machine works. Second, in the beginning, my stitches kept getting tangled, and I realized all I needed to do was fix the tension. You just have to play around with the machine to understand how it works. Second, the "S" button is not in the stitch selector dial but stitch length. I've made 4 different projects with this machine so far and I love it. Works well and I'm sure I'll have this one for a while.

(More customer reviews)This Singer is no good. I have attempted sewing with this several times, and have unfortunaly been able to make only ONE successful line of stiching. I have played around with this so many times thinking that "maybe this time it will work" but it hasn't. I tried contacting Singer and got back a standard email that did not have anything to do with my question. Also, the instruction book that claims to be easy to read, explains things in a difficult manner, and the pictures that go along with it are no help. Therefore, I give up, and am taking it back.

(More customer reviews)Ordered these for my mother who had recently purchased a Brother CS6000I sewing machine, with uses the larger (11.5mm, 7/16th-inch) bobbins. Although (at least at the time of purchase) this product appeared when you searched for the correct Brother part number AND the CS6000I appeared as a buying suggestion on this item's product page, it is important to note that these bobbins are of the smaller type, therefore NOT compatible with the Brother CS6000I. Since "customers who bought this product also bought" the CS6000I, it looks as if it might be a common mistake.
The product itself seems to be of good quality if you need the smaller bobbins, but the important compatibility information that is present on the back of the packaging is missing on the product page.
